...the wonders of nature!

It's cold outside...

I awoke yesterday to be greeted by temperatures of -39C (-38F), before adding in the windchill temps... cold enough to make anyone shudder!

...my warm breath forms a hazy cloud around me as soon as it meets with the nippy air.

My fingers freeze quickly as I perform my chores, and I rapidly move from task to task in an effort to finish my job and return inside to a warm cozy house.

Have you ever wondered how all the little creatures survive in this weather... it's even hard to believe they do...

Winter is the perfect time for footprints, a sign of life.

I look for tracks, sometimes following them, trying to see where they lead to... and even, what type of critter it is... it's a fun past time during the cold months....

...a tiny hole under the snow most likely the tunnel of a mouse... the pile of deadfall in the corner of the garden covered with snow creates a perfect haven for little critters as the snow insulates and keeps the air warm around them...

It's amazing to think how the little creatures survive, how noses don't freeze, tips of ears remain intact, the hairless feet of tiny birds do not shatter from freezing...

... do you ponder about the wonders of nature!

 Happy life!

  1. I may venture out for snow tracks tomorrow. I liked this . . . I wonder where the animals and birds go when there are non stop snowfalls for days! Then some sun . . . and they appear again!

  2. OK, now that's cold; I don't mind a -15 or even -20 but when she get's into the -30's that's a bit too nippy for me! I often wonder the same about the critters Heather, how they endure the bone chilling cold that sends us racing back inside. Wonderful track pictures, my pups usually stomp all over the ones I see and try to follow as they snuffle along them! Thanks for sharing your pictures and stay warm! Deb

  5. Thinking about the delicate balance of nature : water, sunlight, ecosystems, plants and animals usually results in an awareness of it’s beauty. Heather, I cannot fathom surviving minus anything. That is simply beyond cold. It is also beautiful beyond measure . . . and thank you.

  10. Heather, I love these pictures of the various footprints. I am always amazed at how birds, in particular survive the colder temps. They have so little to keep them warm and their feet and legs seem so vulnerable. I can only think that they were created to withstand the rigors of winter, for those that don't migrate. Their and small mammals circulatory systems must work much differently than ours. You always make me wonder... Ann

  11. We had that horrid cold last week. Then it was so warm the water was running down the streets a few days later. Crazy! I always worry about the furry little creatures when it gets so cold. They probably find a cozy burrow somewhere and hide for a few days!
    Keep warm!
